Chiropractic Treatment & Services
Chiropractic physicians are experts in caring for neuromusculoskeletal conditions. This means that a Doctor of Chiropractic are not just a “back doctor”, as we provide therapy for most of the body’s aches and pains. Chiropractic treatment is not limited to manipulation of joint as there are a variety of tools available. At Harmony Chiropractic Center, we do treat neck and low back pain, but we also treat shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle problems as well. The following is a list of some conditions that can be helped with chiropractic treatment:
- Numbness and Tingling
- Pinched Nerves
- Repetitive Motion Injuries
- Rotator Cuff Syndrome (shoulder pain)
- Spinal Disc Injuries
- Sports Injuries
- Strains & Sprains
- Work-related Injuries
There are many options for treating your problem at Harmony Chiropractic Center. Dr. Royer has multiple options for treating your problem.
All new patients will receive a complete history, review of systems and examination. The exam is used to determine if chiropractic care is appropriate for your condition and what techniques or modalities would best to help correct your problem. The exam will consist of range-of-motion testing, neurological testing and various orthopedic maneuvers. Further testing may be needed in some cases, which could include blood tests, x-rays or advanced imaging such as an MRI or CT scans. People may need advanced testing like electromyography and nerve conduction studies for certain nerve related problems Please note that further testing will only be performed on a case-by-case basis as deemed necessary by the doctor. Those that have conditions that are not amenable to chiropractic care will be sent to the proper specialist in order to receive appropriate care.
The SFMA focuses Chiropractic treatment
The Selective Functional Movement Assessment is used to classify faulty movement patterns that may be the cause of pain and dysfunction. This information is used to help focus chiropractic manipulation, soft tissue treatment and rehabilitation.
The small bones that make up the spine are called vertebrae. Problems such as pain can result when these vertebrae do not move properly. A chiropractic adjustment is given to help restore the normal motion in the spine. This is usually one of the main treatments provided by Doctors of Chiropractic.
Rehabilitation as Chiropractic Treatment
Most people know that exercises are good for them, but many do not know that certain exercises can be a way to help rid yourself of pain and other problems. At Harmony Chiropractic Center, stretches and resistance training will be used along with other advanced exercises to help re-educate the muscles and restore proper functional movement.
Muscular dysfunction can result in a weakened structure and ultimately lead to injury. The new mindset in rehabilitation and healthcare should create programs that address functional capacity as part of a safe program designed especially for each individual person. “Corrective exercise is a term used to describe the systematic process of identifying a neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction, developing a plan of action and implementing an integrated corrective strategy. This process requires knowledge and application of an integrated assessment process, corrective program design, and exercise technique1.” Corrective Exercise Training would be used for individuals who possess muscle imbalances or who’ve come off an injury and prepares that individual to re-enter into appropriate exercises.
Nutrition and Dietary Supplements
Nutrition is a huge part of not only how you feel but how quickly your body recovers from injury and illness. Eating the wrong foods is not only unhealthy for your waistline but is detrimental to the rest of you as well. Treating people for pain involves a multidimensional approach to resolve the pain and nutritional guidance is only one is only one of these aspects.
Soft Tissue Treatment
Manual therapy is a type of treatment, used by Doctors of Chiropractic and physical therapists, that focuses on the muscles and other soft tissues. It can involve anything from assisted stretching or focusing on those painful “knots” that we all get. A special type of manual therapy called the Graston Technique may be used to break up scar tissue and restore the proper range-of-motion.
Massage therapy will be indicated for some patients with tissue restriction or muscle spasm and we have an excellent licensed massage therapist on-site. Harmony Chiropractic Center also has a working relationship with several local massage therapists.
Many types of modalities are used at Harmony Chiropractic Center, Inc. The Kinesio Taping Method can be used to decrease pain and support joints and muscle without reducing the mobility of the joint.
Intersegmental traction is used to increase the mobility of the spine and decrease pain as the patient lies on a “roller table”. While lying face up on the table, it passively induces motion into the spine and helps to stretch spinal joints and increase mobility. The majority of patients find intersegmental traction to be relaxing. It feels good in is helpful with getting the spine moving. Intersegmental traction improves the circulation of spinal fluids and helps to increase and restore the necessary motion to the spine.
Electric stimulation is used to help reduce pain and increase blood flow to the injured or painful area. The main type of electric stimulation used in the office is interferential therapy. It works by sending tiny amounts of electrical impulses into the tissues surrounding an injury or painful area. The intersection of the waveform stimulates the body to release endorphins and other natural painkillers. It is different than Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) which is occasionally sold to patients to be used at home and is powered by a 9 V battery. It feels like a faint pins and needles sensation and most patients enjoy it. It helps reduce painful symptoms, decrease local swelling, promote muscle tone, aid in restoration of normal joint movement, promote release of the body’s natural pain killers and accelerates the healing process.
Custom Foot Orthotics
The base of your whole body is your foot. It is very biomechanically important that your foot move properly when transferring your weight while you walk or run. Often, the foot, with twenty-six different bones in it, can be one of the main causes of pain and dysfunction in the rest of the body. An altered gait can cause problems up the leg and distort the hips and pelvis. A problem with a foot on one side can even contribute to pain and dysfunction in the shoulder on the opposite side of the body!
Custom foot orthotics can correct problems in the feet, knees, hips and lower back. A custom mold is made of your foot using specialized foam and it is sent off to the orthotics lab. You will receive instructions on how to properly break in your feet when our office receives your custom-made foot orthotics. Unlike the generic foot inserts you can buy at the grocery store or pharmacy, these custom-made orthotics are made specifically to control the motion of your feet. Studies even show that custom-made orthotics can add up to fifteen yards onto your golf swing.
Advanced Allergy Testing
While nutrition is the basis for feeling well, eating the wrong things can set you up for major problems. Many people are allergic to things they do not even know about. These allergies are not like the anaphylactic reactions that occur with exposure to peanuts or bee stings where one needs to be concerned about breathing emergencies. These severe allergies are not promoters of inflammation in the body.
Everyone needs to try to reduce their exposure to allergens in the air and reduce or eliminate any foods to which they may be allergic. Delayed-onset allergic reactions build up over time and increase sensitivity to other allergies. These allergies do not show up on a typical back scratch test and are often overlooked, but they can be tested for with an advanced blood test. Elimination of the foods which return as positive for allergies can greatly reduce the frequency and severity of several different symptoms.
For more information and a list of specific problems that can be associated with delayed-onset allergies, please click here.
An elimination diet can also be used to determine which foods cause symptomatic problems, but this is very time-consuming and requires great attention to detail by the patient. Dr. Royer would also be happy to help you determine your food allergies using this method, if you prefer.
